Dear teacher:
This document is being submitted in support of my application for admissioninto your program.
Born in June 1974, I grew up in Lanzhou, a city that boasts of a history ofthousands of years and a cultural heritage that is as colorful as it is old. Fewcities, either in China or beyond, can match it in the richness of architecturalstyles. Stradding the upper Yellow River that sired the Chinese civilization,Lanzhou prides itself in both her past glory laden in the ancient structures onthe north bank and her new found prosperity oozing out of the dazzlinghigh-rises in the south. Although, as a child, I was not always able toarticulate my admiration for such striking contrast, I constantly beheld thecitys landscape in awe. I began to understand, at that young age, thatarchitecture can be a powerful symbol of culture, a people and the spirit of anera.
My first intellectual mentor, one of my parents best friends, was an artistseasoned in oil painting and photography. She often brought me with her when shetraveled, and it was on these trips that her creative mind worked in full gear.I thus observed how human hands could work wonders by recreating the beauty ofnatural scenery in the form of sketches, paintings and photos. What was moreimportant, I got to know that there are professions of creative work that callsfor imagination and craftsmanship.
Fervent with creative art and fascinated with architectural design, I enteredin 1992 into the Department of Architecture of Tsinghua University, Chinas topengineering school, on the strength of my outstanding performance in the highlycompetitive National University Entrance Examinations.
At Tsinghua, I went through five years of vigorous training and thus acquiredexquisite skills in drawing and design. Since I understood from early childhoodthat inspiration often comes from nature, I traveled far and wide throughoutChinas vast territory, setting my foot even in outlying Tibet and Xingjiang, both in the countrys westernmost interior. These travels allowed me to tracemodern Chinas culture to its different sources, and the variety not only deeplyimpressed me but also fired my imagination. In my graduation project, CashiContemporary Art Museum in Xinjiang, I successfully blended a naturalenvironment into my artistic design by using a system of water circulation tosupport and sustain the building. As the most significant resource in anagricultural enclave surrounded by desert, water represents hope for both thepeople and their land. With the water circulation system, the building took onadded vitality.
In mid-1997, I graduated with my B. S. and took a job as a designer with theBeijing-based "company." My career as an architect thus took off.
Once I have settled into the real world of architectural design, I developedmy career path quickly, playing substantial roles in a stream of projects. Todate, my most significant responsibility has been to work as a main designer in(a key state) project, in which I led a group of my colleagues in meeting adaunting challenge. In addition to gaining a profound understanding of thetechnical difficulties necessarily attendant to such large-scale projects, Ilearned to work effectively within a team that also included my clients andcolleagues. The teamwork thus not only strengthened my professional competenceat conceptual and technical design but also honed my leadership skills that canbe put to good use in other situations. As a result, I now feel even moreconfident of myself than I was before.
My experience in general, and the six years of frequent traveling inparticular, has left an indelible mark on my intellectual development. As I cannow readily appreciate a societys cultural, historical and socio-politicalimpact on its architectural styles, I now try to reflect my own cultural andsocial background in my own designs. These days, I view architecture not just asa career but, more importantly, as an expression of my professional progress, and I fell that it is an view more compatible with Western rather than Chinesepedagogy. In any case, I have already been through Chinas best school forarchitectural studies, and I am convince that the further development of myprofessional qualifications requires more advanced training in a school likeyours. I believe that advanced studies under your seasoned guidance will endowme with a broader vision and more profound insights, with which I can make stillmore contribution to my motherland China.
Yours sincerely,

Dear teacher:
My interest in law stems from the knowledge that it affects every aspect ofour lives, despite our often being oblivious to it. Without law, I would nothave the right to education, to survival and to freedom of speech. Without law, there would be no legal boundary between right and wrong. Law acts as thefoundation of society, and without it we could be deprived of every basicright.
Work experience has allowed me to see how law can be applied to real-lifesituations. During my placement, I was able to look through case files and sitin on interviews with clients as well as doing research using legal textbooks. In addition to showing me how relevant law is to everyday life, work experienceemphasised the all-encompassing nature of law and made me appreciate theworkload of a solicitor. I also did work experience in Stuttgart, spending timewith a judge, a lawyer specialising in German-Irish Law and a firm specialisingin employment law. I was able to sit in on negotiations, see how a judge comesto a verdict and how evidence is analysed. Work experience gave me a flavour ofinternational law, and I enjoyed the complexity of dealing with two differentlegal systems. Not only was this beneficial as additional work experience, I wasalso able to prove to myself that I could live independently and that I ammature enough cope in a foreign environment. I have also carried out researchinto the study of law, attending a pre-law conference in London and reading‘Learning the Law’ by Glanville Williams and ‘The Law Machine’ by Marcel Berlinsand Clare Dyer. I believe the subjects I have chosen will also give me a goodfoundation for studying law. Mathematics would aid me greatly, as it is bothlogical and methodical as well as being challenging. I believe that EnglishLiterature has provided me with skills essential for studying law such asanalysis, comprehension and interpretation. Economics encourages one to selectrelevant information from long passages of text, and to apply theory toreal-life situations. It also presents ethical and moral issues which raisesdiscussion and debate, as a result I have learnt to argue my point coherently, whilst respecting the other’s point of view.
I have also been given several positions of responsibility both insideschool and in extra curricular activities. I represented my class on the StudentCouncil, where I learnt to work successfully as a team member, and improved theschool environment as a result. This year, I have also been appointed Head Girl. This will enable me to further improve my teamwork, organisational skills aswell as demonstrating my leadership potential. As Head Girl, my duties includerepresenting the school and speaking in assembly. I have represented the schoolin public speaking on several occasions, resulting in the school being awardedrunner-up overall for a Safety competition. I also do public speaking in YoungFarmers’ Club, having achieved 1st at county level and 3rd in an impromptu classat national level. Public speaking has required me to be articulate andeloquent. In addition to these, impromptu public speaking requires making thebest use out of the time given for planning and remaining calm under pressure. As Public Relations Officer in my Young Farmers’ Club, I was awarded runner-upat county level. My role required me to write articles about the activities atYoung Farmers’ Club and illustrate these with photos. I needed to be organisedin order to meet the newspapers’ printing deadlines, which required timemanagement. As peer mentor in school, I am trained to deal with information of asensitive nature and am a good listener.
As a result of my responsibilities, I believe I am someone who could adjustwell to university life, and I am enthusiastic about the next level of educationwhere I can focus primarily on law, a subject that motivates and excites me.
Yours sincerely,

Dear teacher:
I got my very first glimpse into law by watching my father, my hero, aPh.D. of law and now the Chinese ambassador to Barbados. I have been inspired byhis work as an international lawyer and a career diplomat while growing up. Formany years, I have been preparing myself through academic and extra-curriculumactivities, hoping that I can make a difference for the world. I believepursuing the Master’s degree in Law at Cornell University will assist me instriving towards the goal.
With my dedication and my parent’s unconditional support, I successfullyentered the …… University, one of the top law schools in China for legaleducation. I have explored a wide range of different law theories in the CivilLaw field and had an opportunity to work on logical writing. It has been theseyears of study at …… University that has enlightened me and laid a solidfoundation for my legal career.
In addition, I have also participated in various extra-curricularactivities. As class monitor, the head of the Information Department in StudentCommittee, and the head of Research Department in our college, I am entrustedwith many responsibilities. My leadership skills and organizational abilitieshave been greatly enhanced. Through various volunteer experiences, I have hadmore opportunities to help the under-privileged. All of these extracurricularactivities are integral parts of a multiple legal education and have contributedto my professional growth.
Amid my strenuous study, I had an opportunity to participate in theAmerican Legal System Study Program summer of my sophomore year and I wasexposed to the great American culture. I engaged in an internship program atMichigan District Court, where I followed Judge ……. It was a great opportunityfor me to see how the courts operate in the United States. The differencesbetween the US and China legal systems provoked my curiosity. I was eager toexplore how to ensure substantive justice in a case while following due processand how to apply precedents to different situations. I went on my secondexchange study-abroad program to ……University fall of 2012 and participated intheir LL.M. program. During this exchange study period, the issue of how tobalance crime control and protection of human rights perplexed me. From then on,the thought of completing the LL.M. program in Cornell Law School, a school withunsurpassed legal education, has propelled me.
As a part of my degree, I interned at different legal departments. I wasvery fortunate to have an opportunity to intern at the Beijing office of ……. Byinvolving myself in cases such as security offerings by Chinese corporateissuers and US security class actions against China-based companies listed on USstock exchanges, I became more aware of how a practicing lawyer gets involved ininternational trades. I researched on whether some foreign statutes areeffective and I participated in legal work and preliminary drafting of researchreports. It was the first time that I felt like I was making a contribution tosociety as lawyer. I sought for other internship opportunities to elevate myprofessionalism after my experience at ……. At Beijing …..Peoples Court, Ilearned the trial procedures in the Chinese court. Through drafting, imputingand proofreading legal documents, I have become more familiarized with thewriting process and became more able to write with greater accuracy. Theinternship at Beijing …… Law Firm brought my overall abilities into fullpractice. From filing a marriage case, collecting evidences, putting it on trialto settling it, I participated in the whole process. With my sight set on morechallenges, I would like to deepen my legal skills and be equipped forinternational experiences. To that end, pursuing an LL.M. at Cornell Law Schoolseems to be the best option.
I believe that pursuing an LL.M. at Cornell University would provide mewith the necessary foundation to understand the nuances and intricacies ofdifferent legal systems, and help me add an international perspective. I am mostinterested in taking courses at Cornell Law School such as International andForeign Legal Research and International Law and Foreign Direct Investment, aswell as being an active member of the Briggs Society of International Law. Asone of the Ivy League universities, Cornell University combines outstanding, preeminent faculty with a diverse and talented student body. I would like toattend various special lectures and activities Cornell Law School offers tosupplement the core curriculum. Completing the Cornell Law School’s LL.M.program will bring me to the next phase of my professional career.

Dear teacher:
My most important aim for the next few years is to further my studies ofHistory. Studying the subject at GCSE and A Level has extended my interest inSocial and European History, and how this relates to world History. The subjecthas enhanced my understanding and interest of current affairs and contemporaryissues, which I enjoy following closely. As a student of History, I aim toextend my analytical and presentational skills. Once given an area to study, Ilike to research independently, but also working with others. My time at SixthForm College has enabled me to improve my reliability, punctuality and abilityto work individually, while coping with the demands of exams and deadlines. TheAS levels I selected; English, Geography, History and Politics complemented eachother well, enabling me to use the knowledge of one subject to develop myunderstanding of another. They have also extended my abilities in research, essay and report writing. My AS results proved pleasing, after analysing myresults, they have given me realistic targets for the year ahead. I haveevaluated my progress of my first year in order to find weaknesses in exam andstudy technique and I am working on these for a hopefully successful outcome forthe years ahead.
In addition to my academic studies, I have achieved qualifications in firstaid, and I feel confident to administer first aid in unlikely situations. Overthe past two years, I have helped with a youth holiday scheme connected with myChurch where I had responsibility for looking after and helping children. In myspare time, I enjoy reading non-fiction books, and travelling to see many partsof the country. My Duke of Edinburgh award scheme enabled me to deal effectivelywith decision making within a group.
Out of College, a part-time job at a newsagent, over the past two years hasgiven me responsibilities such as dealing with customers, stock and largeamounts of money, and also being organised and punctual. At my secondary school,I helped to set up a student council, as I felt that there were student issuesthat needed to be dealt with. Other responsible positions I have held are bothprefect, and fifth year representative at my previous school, and formrepresentative on the student council at my present college. Work experience atan Estate Agent in Cambridge gave me good experience of working in a city andcommuting, and also insight into an area of business. I hope to travel and workat an orphanage near to Jakarta, which I have maintained links with, and also toNew Zealand. My career prospects are left open for now, but I do have interestsin research and education.
My main priority for now is to complete my A Levels to the best of myability and to go on to University, not just for the degree but for the entireexperience it has to offer and I look forward to moving on, learning and meetingnew people.

Dear teacher:
Studying Sports Science at Advanced Level has confirmed that a sportsrelated career is the path I would love to follow. At GCSE, I was able to gainan in-depth understanding of not only the physical side of PE, but also thetheory, which has now been developed by my A level studies. The theory aspect ofPE appeals to me greatly, as it aids my understanding for successful personalcompetition and explains how some elite performers have an additional edge to goon to win major competitions. Achieving this success takes two mainscharacteristics into consideration, the physiological element of sport and alsothe psychological side. Due to these qualities I decided that Biology andPsychology would complement my understanding of Sports Science. In theseadditional studies, I have furthered my knowledge of complicated processes suchas the mechanism of the heart and brain, and applied it to my Sports Scienceknowledge, giving me a more comprehensive understanding of a topic
In 1996, I joined Ipswich Harriers Athletics Club and discovered my passionand talent for throwing the javelin. Since then it has become more than just ahobby; I have pursued the sport, participating in events initially for my club, and more recently for the County. I have consistently been County Champion andattended English Schools this year, not for the first time. I was also offeredthe chance to compete at an international level for Northern Ireland, butunfortunately had a serious back injury at the time, which has since recovered.I am hoping that next season the opportunity to compete at this level will ariseagain to help me develop my sporting career
For the past two and a half years I have been working at Anglia Indoor KartRacing. Once again, this enables me to incorporate another sport I enjoy into mytime. Throughout my time here I have become more experienced, beginning as atrack marshal and now regularly race directing and training new staff. My racedirecting involves having the confidence to brief a large group of people aboutthe running of each meeting and certain safety measures. The job also entails mecommentating on the race, controlling the computer, directing the marshals andtaking responsibly for my colleagues and the customers. I am a trusted member ofthe team and often handle money in the café. I am also very reliable, alwaysbeing punctual
Throughout my time at school I have been keen to help promote it. To dothis I have helped at Open Evenings, and have aided less able pupils with theirreading on a one-to-one basis. I found this very rewarding and satisfying.Another experience that I thoroughly enjoy is assisting in Lower School PElessons. This gives me the opportunity to observe teaching methods, and workwith small groups of children of mixed abilities to improve their skills andconfidence
Besides promoting the school in a social manner I upheld its reputation inits sporting successes. This included captaining the basketball and athleticsteams and playing for the football, cricket, badminton and volleyball teams.
Yours sincerely,

Dear teacher:
I have always had an interest in language and the arts. This has led to afascination with literature and fundamentally, the poignancy and exuberance onecan convey through the written word. For me, English Literature feels moreuninhibited and complete, mainly because a text is something very personal toits creator, giving it a more individual dimension than other subjects, feedingthe imagination as well as the intellect. However, I cant truly be immersed insomething without finding it challenging. I find the task of searching for amessage in a book a demanding affair, forcing myself to focus every inch of myemotional and rational faculties to extract the authors possible meanings andpresent an original, credible interpretation. My favourite writers include JackKerouac, Allen Ginsberg and others from the Beat Generation. In addition, Ienjoy Victorian authors including Dickens and Joseph Conrad. This wide scope ofBritish and American literature houses a myriad of genres, topics and plotswhich directly or indirectly apply to the way we live in present day Westernsociety. For example, Ive found On the Road by Kerouac to be a poignantexpression of a mans journey outside the perimeters of the average Americanlife which Kerouac paints as banal. His only motivation to travel is toexperience, the ragged and ecstatic joy of pure being.
I am enthusiastic about all the subjects Ive taken at A Level, consequently my college experience has been rewarding both personally andacademically. Through Modern History and Philosophy Ive developed the skill offormulating cogent arguments and articulating them succinctly, either orally orin writing. Furthermore, all my subjects have taught me to confidently expressmy opinions while maintaining open-mindedness in evaluating opposing ones. Thecontent of my subjects and the concepts and knowledge assessed in them has ledme to transfer skills Ive learnt from one subject to another. For example, Iassessed the play, The Birthday Party in relation to existential ontology, illustrating the extent to which my subjects complement each other.
My cultural interests reflect my academic pursuits and the way I expressmyself in said academic domain. Attending the Politics Society of my college hasexpanded my understanding of differing opinions on current affairs as well aslearning the information which substantiates those claims. This has beenaccomplished through attending lectures by academics and politicians such asTony Benn.
I am also a huge fan of cinema and my favourite directors. Hisidiosyncratic fusion of Surrealism and Expressionism make his worksaesthetically original as well as thought provoking. More recently Ive beennurturing my creative side by writing a sitcom and recently completed the pilotepisode. Being a keen photographer I enjoy taking photographs whenever theopportunity arises and am currently taking an evening course on 35mm filmphotography. This allows me to channel a vague image in my head to somethingrewardingly tangible.
More recently, I travelled Western Europe. I found it culturally fruitfuland instrumental to my personal growth. I visited many historical landmarks andmost notably the Louvre in Paris, a Monastic hospice in the Swiss Alps and theRoyal Palace in Madrid. I also climbed two mountains, forcing me to give totalfocus to the task at hand and synchronise my body and mind as one. I find itessential to my well-being to express myself through whichever medium Iminterested in at the time. Fortunately, the printed page remains a constantsource of inspiration and interest for me, resulting in me being a committed andfervent person. I am confident that I have the qualities and drive to succeed atuniversity and look forward to making a significant contribution to universitylife.
Yours sincerely,
